After almost two years of hosting Innovation Imitation blog (and another blog) on Blogger, I have decided to step it up and move to WordPress. Blogger is a great product, incredibly simple to setup and easy to maintain, but I felt that I have come to the point when I need more control and better design options.
So I purchased .com domain-name (through GoDaddy) and set-up my own hosting (through WebFaction). Installing WordPress through WebFaction’s control panel was as a snap, and all that was left was to find a good-looking theme and configure it. And that proved to be the hardest part.
My goals for the theme design were:
- Clean and unobtrusive design that puts the content in the front
- Large and readable fonts and colors
- Conspicuous menu navigation
- Configurability
After going through virtually hundreds of free themes, I still couldn’t find one that would suit my goals. And then I stumbled upon WooThemes studio. These guys are professional designers that create WordPress themes, and after looking at their portfolio I found just what I needed: the Canvas theme – clean, configurable and widget-ready. 70$ for a theme is not that much to pay (you get two more themes for free), considering the pains I went through trying to customize several free themes for my needs.
So what do you think? How does it stand up in terms of readability, navigation ease, elegance ? Please be blunt 🙂
I like it. It’s really easy on the eye, and the focus is definitely on the content. I think I’m jealous. 🙂
Thanx, that’s exactly what I tried to achieve. By the way,I really like the font you use on your blog. I might steel it one day 🙂

Hi Mike,
I think the new design is great, congratulations 🙂
Even more dramatic is the move to your own domain – it’s like the blog’s Bar-Mitzvah (or should I say, in the spirit of the times, like its initiation into the Omaticaya…).
One thing you might want to consider is to use Disqus for comments. At least from a user standpoint, it’s pretty good.
Godspeed!

Thanx man, I’ll definitely check-out Disqus. Meanwhile I canceled the need to leave a name and an email when commenting, just to make it easier for people.
